Well I decided that aggression was the name of the game and the demolition of Robert Shaw can be seen on the games page. unfortunately I was not quite first to finish as Chris won by default. The rest was a procession with everyone looking in control and pushing home the advantage. Jim appered to be struggling mopst but class told.....

a few thoughts from Cliff
The Plans of Mice and Men came to nought when Rotherham fielded a strong team.
I did not see much of the play.
To my inexpert eye, Neil looked behind in the mid-game, but gained a draw.
Nigel turned down the offer of a draw. He had the benefit of two pawns to one at one edge of the board, but failed to capitalise on this advantage and lost the match on the opposite side of the board. I only hope that our first team beat Nomads 3, otherwise Michael will blame me !!! (they did)
Close match but decisive looking score
Thanks to Nomads for the report. My game is on the games page and Nick's game can be accessed via the link in the report

Captain's Corner
Our reward for losing to Woodseats I in the first round of the Cup was a trip to Worksop (for Ian, Kevin and myself the third in as many weeks) for the chance to take on last year's Cup runners-up. Expecting a very tough match, we travelled more in hope than expectation but were lifted slightly when we realised that our opponents were missing several players (thanks to a clash with a Mansfield match). Nevertheless, we were outgraded on most boards so it looked like it would be against the odds if we had any success.
For some time, I harboured thoughts of a famous victory - things looked fairly even on most boards and if anything Joel and Sam were slightly better. Two wins, three draws...could we do it?
If only promise could be converted into reality.. but it wasn't to be. It all started well enough though - on board five Joel pushed his kingside pawns and when Nicholas castled in behind them, it seemed an invitation to push on some more...Joel did, the centre of the board caved in and a nice discovered check set up a forced mating sequence. 1-0 to us; but around about this time Kev managed to drop a piece and Mike's position took a turn for the worse... 1-0 quickly became 2-1 to our opponents as first Ivan picked up a couple of loose pawns and exchanged off Mike's threats, and then Phil made the extra piece tell against Kev.
By now things were looking exceedingly dubious in my own game - an unsuccessful outing for the Wing Gambit against the French as Jim neutralised anything I might have had, generated threats on f2, picked up a couple of pawns and set himself up for a grandstand finish; I dutifully obliged by giving him a mate in one and the match was lost.
So, all that was left to play for now was pride. Ian had been doing fine against Chris in a Sveshnikov; Chris seemed to have a week a-pawn but a tactic with a back rank mating threat let him pick up a pawn of his own and all of a sudden Ian couldn't hold things together. Two pawns down, he played on but the result was never in doubt and when he attempted a stalemate swindle Chris saw through it and promoted to a rook to avoid even the risk of a draw.
Finally, as Ian's game was finishing, so Sam's was also drawing to a close. A queenless middlegame had simplified into a minor piece ending where Sam was a pawn up but was not going to be able to maintain that advantage. Phill offered a draw; Sam declined but blundered a pawn and this gave Phill enough holes to invade with his king and knight, forcing a pawn through to the seventh and after the final pieces were exchanged, setting himself up for a won king and pawn ending.
So a 5-1 defeat in the end - not as bad as the result makes out and some good experience for the squad of playing strong opponents. We'll be back next season, when hopefully the draw will be a little kinder!

The master plan consisted of the second team losing and the first team winning.....
The second team carried out the plan almost to perfection with Rob spoiling the show with a tense win in an ending intime trouble. Steve should have won, but in abetter ending he went wrong in his opponents time. But lower down our guys were ground down by stronger more experienced opposition
Worksop II 1-5 Clay Cross
Rob Porter 1-0 Carl Gartside
Steve Turner 0-1 Paul Kelman
Tim England 0-1 Kieran Redhead
Alan Story 0-1Jerome Redhead
Cliff Briggs 0-1Mike Colclough
Frank Holt 0-1Brian Lever
Phoenix brought a strong team with a 150 on board 6 but not real super stars (161 on top board) The game below was a throw back to the romantic era with Carl throwing pieces at Jon and after the game there was huge debate about whether or not Carl missed a win. (Anaylsis by jon tait.)
