league table

Team Captain Cliff Briggs

Good performance against tough opposition
Worksop C     2-4       Aughton B
Michael Clark    0.5    0.5    P Swanson
Dave Fidler    1    0    P Connolly
Tim England    0.5    0.5    B Williams
Steve Turner    0    1    J Reynolds
Alan Story    0    1    J Primrose
Cliff Briggs    0    1    J Barker

whenever you play Aughton you know you are in for a tough game. All experienced players and no pushovers

Tim played well to achieve a draw and Dave played a great end game.    With only rooks and pawns on the table and with Dave’s opponent having a preponderance of pawns, Dave made the most of his passed pawn which he eventually queened to win the game.     I made one oversight to lose a pawn and ended with kings and pawns.    It looked as if I had a chance of a draw with a large time advantage, but my opponent’s extra pawn proved decisive. Having made a clean sweep of the bottom three boards Aughton went on to win 4 – 2 overall.

Another draw!

We only managed to scrape a victory against bottom of the league team Ecclesall C last night. In the closing stages, the end result was down to Tim.    He was in a dominant position, but gave us a fright when he donated an attacking pawn.   This proved to be insignificant and he still sailed to victory. I managed a draw, but should have won easily.    I made two poor moves when I had 30 minute in hand and should have taken more time.    I was a rook up in the end game and lost it when I took a pawn allowing my opponents bishop to line-up my two rooks.    lessons to be learnt !!!

Dave reported that he made another mistake in this game, again losing a piece for nothing. Frank won quickly and Alan lost quickly, so I didn’t see anything of these two games. I was in a poorer position in mid-game, but put concerted pressure on a backward pawn while re-grouping. The game resolved into kings with equal pawns on both sides, but I managed to force his king out of position to win. Nigel was in a slightly better position in the end game.    His opponent then made two poor moves to give Nigel an easy victory. The game of the night was played by Tim ( substituting for Steve, who didn’t turn up ).    With Tim having 4 minutes on his clock compared to 20 minutes by his opponent and being a pawn down, Tim managed to capture a pawn and create a “passed pawn” for himself in the process.   His opponent then missed an opportunity to capture a pawn ( possibly 2 pawns ).     Tim managed to reach the back rank with his pawn and was in a winning position when his opponents flag fell, but with only seconds left on his own clock. So a 4 – 2 win for Worksop.

report by cliff

My game went to the wire on time, so I saw the ending to only one match :   Michael looked to be under threat and under time pressure.    One of the onlookers spoke to Michael about a rule during Michael’s thinking time and Michael “saw red”.    However, Michael managed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat with only seconds left on his clock.     Dave was apparently in a strong position, but let it slip and lost a rook. Tim had a very quick victory.    In the middle of my game I had much better development, and was in a position to castle on either side.   I made a strategically bad decision to castle queen-side and was soon under unrelenting pressure.    With only a minute left on my clock and two on his, he claimed mate and I accepted defeat.    It was not in fact mate, but he had deservedly won the match.      Nigel drew and Frank lost giving Aughton a 3.5 to 2.5 victory.

Cliff Writes
My opponent played an opening as white that was new to me and I responded
  badly and lost quickly.
( I played him again with white and won. )
Alan was quickly a rook and a pawn down but came back to win.
Dave accepted an offer of a draw, after which his opponent claimed that
Dave could have won ( this was the deciding match with the score standing at
2.5  to 2.5 )
Steve played well to stave off defeat and secure a draw.
I didn’t see the other games.

The Nomads report
Monday at the Horseshoe Inn.  Yet again.  This time it was the turn of Nomads D
to make the long trip out to Worksop, with special mention to Kev on his fourth
trip in three weeks!  Non-playing captain Eric became a playing one en route
(and a winning one when he got there), as Phil P got the call to stand in for
Nomads E.  In the words of Daniel, Nomads secured a 'lucky draw' when Kev (with
3 pawns) and his opponent (with a rook) agreed a draw in what was apparently a
'totally lost position'.  In the words of Steve, Kev got 'an amazing draw and
saved the day'.  It would seem neither Steve nor Daniel have enough experience
of Kev's games to know that in fact this was actually a missed opportunity for a
Nomads win rather than a fortunate escape. A win for Daniel, a draw for Steve,
and defeat for Henry and Les.  3-3.

Master stroke by captain sees Victory

Worksop C   4   2   Phoenix C
Phill J Beckett  1-0 Absentee
A David Fidler 1-0  Phill Beckett
Osman Yousif  1-0 Shirdel Khosroabadi
Steve J Turner  0-1 T. Konark
Tim England   1-0 John S Knight
Frank Holtn     0-1 Marcus Davis
Cliff full of apologies for Friday's episode pulled his latest tatical master stroke and dropped himself. I was spared the graders nightmare of Phill J Beckett v Phill J Beckett (yes we both have the same initials as well and spelling etc. They named a strong player on board 1 but eventually got a phone call to say he wasn't coming. All the other games proceeded well and Osman soon converted a strong position, Tim was winnning, Steve I thought had evrything under control. Frank was involved in a wild dragon. I went home confident of victory and so it finished

Memory Lapse results in 2 man team

I set off at 6:20 for the match against Sheffield Deaf All went well until I was waiting in traffic on the Sheffield Parkway when my phone went off It was Cliff he had forgotten about the match and failed to pick up the other three players but informed me that Frank was likewise already there. So we had a decison do we play or default. If we had defaulted we would have been docked a point so we had to play.
So Frank and I played on board 1 & 6 (their choice) and we started 4-0 down but two differing wins resulted in a 4-2 loss

(THe games are in the games section)

Inspiring play from stand in captain  edged the C team to an opening victory. No SASCA team is ever a pushover, and this team proved hardworking and gave our old hands a run for their money
